Blue Jay flying away from an oak tree during the late-summer acorn harvest

The Acorns Are Ripe

The oak tree is alive with movement.

It started last week with a few tentative visitors, checking the crop.

One day, a small Blue Jay, too young to have grown into their colouring yet, hopping around the branches, was rewarded with a few acorns. A tiny squirrel arrived next, systematically moving from branch to branch in their search.

The next day I saw four juvenile Jays, silently collecting in the branches. They were joined by a Flicker.

This is not a very big oak, although it has grown tremendously after all the rain this summer. The Flicker pushed it beyond carrying capacity; its arrival sent a few of the Jays elsewhere.

There were few days of silent harvesting before one of the juvenile Jays decided the bounty was too good not to share, and set about calling for others to join the feast with that distinctive come one, come all vocalization.

Now the acorn caps are starting to collect on the ground and the tree is alive with movement as its summer growth turns to autumn abundance for the community around it.
