coyote with a black eye and a blue eye

Heterochromatic Coyote

As winter is coming to a close I have been spending time with coyote, thanking her for her support this season. During Ana Maria’s mentorship call this week coyote came to me with eyes that were two different colours.

My thinking mind immediately pointed out that Heterochromia was common for wolves and huskies but she didn’t think it happened in coyotes.

I thanked her, and stepped around her to see what coyote wanted to tell me.

Something about marbles, bags with marble collections in them. Marbles as a gaming technology was already archaic when I was young, and I have never played marbles myself but I have read about it. The marbles differ in size and colour, and each marble has different strengths. Ok. It a reminder of all of the the different tools I have in my tool belt. I am stepping forward alone but I am supported by the mother line all the way back to the first ancestor.

Later, in a sound bath, I thought about coyote’s unmatched pair of eyes. I saw them clearly. The right eye was blue and it was forward-looking, curious without grasping. The other eye looked inward to the darkness of chaos and creativity. That really resonated with me as I am in the process of starting Wise Women Gathering and have been spending a lot of time identifying how I can be of service and calling in the divine right women to join me.

A few hours later as I was preparing for the eclipse I realized what was probably the most obvious thing that coyote was reminding me of – two-eyed seeing – being open to both western and Indigenous teachings.

Coyote has been a strong ally for me this season, supporting me personally and supporting the sitters in my readings. I am grateful for all of her wisdom and support, but this two-eyed way of seeing reminder stands out as the most important.

Thank you coyote.
